Roughly one in five adults develops varicose veins over the course of their life, and four out of five adults will get spider veins. For some people, these veins aren’t a cause for concern. But others might find their varicose veins or spider veins unsightly or even painful. For these patients, laser vein treatment at New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ offers relief from the embarrassment or discomfort these visible blood vessels may cause.
Varicose and spider veins are damaged veins that form when the valves in the vein weaken, causing the blood to accumulate and put pressure on the vessel walls. These veins may appear red, blue, or purple and in some rare cases may itch, burn, or generally be uncomfortable. Varicose and spider veins are most likely to form in the legs, but can occur across the entire body, including the face. Wherever these veins appear, laser vein treatment can help—whether you want to feel comfortable wearing shorts again or just want the peace of mind that comes with smooth, healthy skin.

There are two types of laser vein treatment: simple and endovenous. A simple laser treatment at Skin & Laser Center of NJ is used to remove spider veins and small varicose veins. As with other laser treatments—like laser tattoo removal and laser hair removal—you will be given goggles to protect your eyes before the treatment begins. The provider will then run the laser over the damaged veins, sending high-intensity beams of light into the tissue. This generates heat, which causes the vein to contract, create scar tissue, and seal off, ultimately fading from view. The treatment itself takes less than half an hour, although most patients require multiple laser vein treatment sessions spaced six to 12 weeks apart to provide the treatment area time to heal.
Endovenous laser treatments are often necessary for larger varicose veins. This procedure is performed using local anesthesia or a light sedative. You will be given goggles to protect your eyes. As part of this treatment, the provider performing your laser vein treatment will place a catheter containing a laser fiber into the vein. Using an ultrasound device to monitor the vein, the provider then removes the catheter. The laser heats up the vein as it is removed, causing the vein to shrink with time.
Following your laser vein treatment session, you may experience some redness, itching, bruising, and swelling in the treatment area. These effects are typically mild and resolve within a short period of time. Following your treatment at Skin & Laser Center of NJ, you will be provided with aftercare instructions to ensure that the treated area heals as quickly as possible. This includes avoiding sun exposure or tanning, blood thinners, hot baths, and standing for long periods of time. Ice packs can be used in 15-minute increments to help reduce swelling.
Some laser vein treatment patients start to see results in about two weeks, although more significant reduction in vein visibility can take four to six weeks.
In addition to laser vein treatments, Skin & Laser Center of NJ offers sclerotherapy, which makes use of an injectable chemical that irritates the unwanted veins and causes them to close off and collapse. Our team can help you determine which approach would be best for you.
