Broken Blood Vessels

Broken blood vessels can develop anywhere on the body, but commonly occur on the face or legs due to a combination of genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle, and other factors. They damaged vessels can appear in a variety of darker hues—red, purple, blue, or black—and range from dots to patches. There are multiple options for removing these vessels due to aesthetic concerns.

Discoloration

The term “skin discoloration” applies to any variance from your typical skin tone. This can include areas that appear red, pink, purple, tan, brown, black, or blue. Beyond birthmarks, discolorations can be caused by infection, sun exposure, inflammation, medications, and other causes. Most discolorations are related to benign conditions, but they can also be a sign of skin cancer or other more serious health problems. Be sure to arrange a skin exam so the cause can be properly identified.

Brown Spots

Whether you call them liver spots, age spots, lentigo, or something else, brown spots are a seemingly inevitable part of life. Associated with a longer life, a primary factor in developing these spots is UV exposure, though injury, skin conditions, insect bites, hormonal shifts, and other elements can contribute to their development. Port-Wine Stain

Purple or red collections of miniscule blood vessels below the skin’s surface can create a dark-pigmented area known as a port-wine stain. These birthmarks are fairly rare—appearing on about three out of every 1,000 babies—but are well known and can be minimized, since they will not fade on their own. Although they often form on the face, they can occur just about anywhere on the body. Because of their high visibility, many people seek to treat them so that they do not appear as obvious.

Facial Redness

Though facial redness is typically temporary and benign—like blushing or flushing—it can be damaging to a person’s self-esteem. Broken blood vessels due to UV damage, stress, conditions like rosacea or acne, inflammation, and more can all contribute to the problem, which impacts people of all ages. Melasma

Dubbed “the mask of pregnancy,” melasma develops as brown or gray-brown patches of skin, typically on the cheeks and upper lip area. The patches often fade on their own, but there are also treatments available to fade them. As with many skin discolorations, it is a good idea to get a formal diagnosis to rule out more serious conditions that can resemble their benign counterparts.

Vitiligo

Though vitiligo impacts about 1 percent of all people, the highly visible autoimmune disorder that causes lighter-colored patches of skin to develop can be distressing and harmful to a person’s self-image. There is no lasting cure, but there are treatments for managing the condition and creating a more evenly colored surface.
