Despite our best efforts to diet and exercise, there are areas of the body that are unfortunately prone to holding onto unwanted pockets of fat. Submental fullness—commonly known as a double chin—can substantially impact a person’s profile and confidence, impacting women and men of all ages. While weight gain is a common cause of submental fullness, genetics and other factors can also contribute to the problem. Unfortunately, there are no exercises that specifically target fat beneath the chin, but thanks to KYBELLA® at New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ, there is a lasting solution to submental fullness.
KYBELLA® is a nonsurgical injectable treatment that has been combating double chins for nearly two decades. The formula includes synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring chemical that helps the body break down and absorb fat. A KYBELLA® treatment at Skin & Laser Center of NJ can reduce submental fat between 20 and 30 percent, resulting in a neckline that appears youthful and elongated.
In late 2016 she founded the Skin & Laser Center of NJ, LLC in Mahwah, NJ where she continues to treat her medical and cosmetic patients, and further pursues her interest in laser medicine. KYBELLA® relies on a substance that your body naturally produces in the digestive system to help break down fats. When injected directly beneath your skin, this deoxycholic acid disrupts the membranes of targeted fat cells, causing them to rupture. From there, immune cells called macrophages clear out the damaged cells. The process of clearing them out can take several weeks, which means the results will be gradual.
After the fat cells have been broken down, those cells are no longer capable of storing fat—meaning the results are lasting and no further treatment will be necessary. The fact that KYBELLA® is a nonsurgical treatment makes it an excellent choice for patients who want to address submental fullness but aren’t necessarily good candidates for a surgical procedure like liposuction or a neck lift.
Every KYBELLA® treatment plan is unique, just as every patient is unique. Your appointment will take between 10 and 30 minutes and involve several injections beneath your chin. Most patients require multiple KYBELLA® sessions spaced at least one month apart in order to achieve their ideal aesthetic goals. While some patients are satisfied after two sessions, others require up to six treatments.
While the deoxycholic acid gets to work right away, it takes time for the lymphatic system to fully remove these fat cells and for the swelling caused by the injections to go down. This means that it can take several weeks after your treatment at Skin & Laser Center of NJ for a noticeable improvement to your profile. It’s common to experience soreness, swelling, and bruising for a few days after your KYBELLA® injections, but this should decrease over time. There are several steps patients can take to improve their healing and outcome, including abstaining from sodium, alcohol, strenuous exercise, and extreme heat right after your treatment.
Patients interested in exploring all their options can also ask us about CoolSculpting®, which uses extremely cold temperatures to freeze the fat that makes up a double chin. Other cosmetic treatments to improve the look of the neck area include microneedling for addressing laxity.
KYBELLA® injections are also available for stubborn pockets of fat on other body parts. Most common include the pockets in front of the armpit, love handles, abdomen, and small bulges on the thighs. Schedule a consultation with one of our professionals to see if you are a candidate.
