As a treatment to remove unwanted facial hair, dermaplaning dates back to ancient Egypt when women used sharpened blades to scrape away hair. Thousands of years later, dermaplaning has evolved both as a hair removal procedure and as a tool to improve skin texture. This minimally invasive procedure involves using a scalpel to scrape away dead skin cells, peach fuzz, and sometimes the top layers of skin to reveal the fresh, healthy skin beneath. For dermaplaning at New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ, providers can focus on small areas of skin or the entire face, depending on the patient’s needs and concerns. A session generally takes less than an hour and requires no downtime after.

Dermaplaning is a procedure with a wide range of applications. Anyone can benefit from this minimally invasive procedure that addresses a variety of concerns. Some of the issues dermaplaning can address include acne scars, dull or dry skin, peach fuzz, skin damaged by sun exposure, and fine lines and wrinkles.
Prior to your dermaplaning treatment at Skin & Laser Center of NJ, your provider may give you some pre-care instructions to help maximize your results. These may include staying hydrated to reduce swelling, avoiding exfoliating treatments in advance of your session, avoiding direct sun exposure and using sunscreen, and refraining from shaving before your visit. Taking these steps will help ensure that your skin is in the best possible condition so that it will heal as quickly as possible.
The amount of time required for a dermaplaning session varies depending on the size of the area being treated, but is usually less than one hour. When the provider pulls the blade over your skin, you may experience a slight scratching or stinging sensation, but the experience is mild and generally well tolerated. After the procedure is over, your provider may apply a soothing gel or ointment to minimize redness, swelling, or irritation. An enzyme treatment and sheet mask are applied at the end. You can return to your normal routine as soon as you’d like.
It’s normal to experience pink and sensitive skin after dermaplaning, but these effects should dissipate within a few days. Following your dermaplaning procedure, you may be asked to take certain aftercare measures, including avoiding direct sunlight, extreme heat, and chlorine in the days after your session. Some patients benefit from multiple dermaplaning sessions, but it’s important to schedule these appointments several weeks apart to ensure full healing.
