Get Relief from Dry Skin and Scaly Patches with Treatment in New Jersey

More than 30 million Americans have been diagnosed with eczema, a group of inflammatory skin conditions characterized by itchiness, dry skin, rashes, scaly patches, blisters, and secondary skin infections. The majority of eczema patients are children, but these skin conditions can also affect adults of all ages. There is no single cause of eczema, but at New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ, we explain that each of the different types has its own unique cause. These include an overactive immune system, genetics, environmental irritants or allergies, and stress.

While there is currently no lasting cure for eczema, our dermatologists can provide treatment to help manage and minimize your symptoms. In addition to developing a treatment plan of medications and/or phototherapy, we can help empower you with knowledge about your condition. With more information about your triggers and skin health, you can help reduce or prevent future flare ups.

Q & A

Commonly Asked Questions

What Kinds of Eczema Does Skin & Laser Center of NJ Help Treat?

There are several different types of eczema, each with a unique cause, symptoms, and treatment. One of the first steps during your consultation at Skin & Laser Center of NJ will be identifying your type of eczema. These are the different types of the condition:

  • Atopic dermatitis is a common type that often starts in childhood, though it can impact patients at any age. It is characterized by itchy, dry, and inflamed skin.
  • Contact dermatitis is another common type caused by something coming into contact with the skin and irritating it or provoking an allergic reaction. This can manifest as itchiness, a rash, or blisters.
  • Dyshidrotic eczema appears as tiny blisters on your hands, feet, or both. Common triggers for this type include products like soap or shampoo, stress, sweat, and rising temperatures.
  • Hand eczema, as the name suggests, impacts the hands. The first symptoms are often dry, chapped skin, which can be followed by patches of red or irritated skin, a burning sensation, itchy blisters, and deep and painful cracks.
  • Neurodermatitis typically begins as an itchy patch of skin. With time, these itchy spots may spread, typically affecting the neck, wrists, forearms, legs, or groin.
  • Nummular eczema, also known as discoid eczema or nummular dermatitis, manifests as circular patches of itchy skin. It can occur at any age, but is more likely to impact men than women. Triggers may include dry or sensitive skin and skin trauma caused by bug bites, scrapes, or chemical burns.
  • Stasis dermatitis is a common type of dermatitis caused by poor blood flow. It is most likely to appear in the lower legs and ankles.

There is no cure for eczema, but there are several effective treatment methods to help minimize your symptoms. The primary goal for eczema treatment is to minimize itching, heal the skin, and prevent infections and future flare ups. Treatments may include prescription moisturizers, topical prescription nonsteroidal creams, topical prescription steroid creams, oral antihistamines, prescription topical antibiotic ointment, and prescription oral antibiotics. Phototherapy, also known as light therapy, can also be used to address moderate to severe symptoms by reducing itchiness and inflammation. For more severe cases, there are new, powerful systemic medications that our providers can discuss with you. Most patients also benefit from a personalized skincare routine to help address their skin’s unique needs.

Our medical dermatology services also include work with patients who have other chronic skin conditions, including psoriasis and rosacea. Skin & Laser Center of NJ’s dermatologists also diagnose and treat acne, skin cancer, and more.
