Get Relief from Painful, Itchy, Unsightly Flare Ups with Diagnosis and Treatment in New Jersey

More than 100 million people worldwide struggle with the chronic condition known as psoriasis. At New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ, we explain that the condition develops when a person’s immune system sends faulty signals that tell skin cells to grow too quickly. This means new skin cells form in days rather than weeks, and the body does not have enough time to shed the excess. As these cells accumulate on the surface, patches begin to appear. For most patients, psoriasis tends to manifest between 15 and 30 years of age. Depending on the type, it may appear as red or pink plaques, thick or scaly skin, or flat bumps, and it can appear on most parts of the body. Having psoriasis has been linked to obesity and heart disease, so it is important to manage your inflammation and be familiar with your condition.

While there’s currently no known cure for psoriasis, Skin & Laser Center of NJ offers several treatment options to help manage psoriasis flare ups. In addition to medications and procedures to minimize discomfort, our dermatologists can help educate you about your condition to empower you to take helpful steps to minimize symptoms. Knowing the conditions that can trigger these flare ups—like stress, a strep infection, certain medications, cold or dry weather, and trauma to the skin—can help reduce exposure to these situations.

Q & A

Commonly Asked Questions

What Kinds of Psoriasis Does Skin & Laser Center of NJ Help Treat?

Each type of psoriasis presents and is treated differently, so one of the first steps during your consultation at Skin & Laser Center of NJ will be identifying your specific form of the condition. Some patients may suffer from multiple types.

  • The plaque type is the most common form and presents as red, raised, rough plaques often covered with silvery scales. This most commonly appears on the elbows, knees, lower back, and scalp.
  • The inverse type manifests as smooth, red patches that develop in the creases where skin rubs against other skin. This is more common in infants and small children.
  • The pustular type is characterized by red, swollen skin with pus-filled bumps. These most commonly appear on the hands and feet.
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis is a severe and rare form of psoriasis that resembles red burns over all or most of the body. Patients with this type of psoriasis should seek immediate medical attention, as it can be life-threatening.
  • The nail type manifests as nail pitting, nail crumbing, and other nail dystrophy.
  • The psoriatic arthritis type most commonly affects the joints in the hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, and toes. It can also affect the lower back. Joint pain due to psoriasis may occur in the presence or absence of skin lesions.

There are several treatment options for psoriasis patients at Skin & Laser Center of NJ. Know that there is no cure for the condition, but we can help you to manage the symptoms and mitigate future flareups. Your dermatologist will choose the best treatment option for you based on the type and severity of your condition. Psoriasis treatment falls into multiple categories:

  • Topical treatment includes creams and lotions that can be applied to your skin, such as corticosteroid cream, vitamin D analogs, retinoid creams, and coal tar preparations.
  • Phototherapy involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet light in a controlled setting.
  • Oral medications.
  • Injectable biologic medications.
  • Combination treatments.

We also offer care for other chronic conditions, such as rosacea and eczema, as well as medical dermatology problems like acne, skin cancer, and more.
