Get Relief from Facial Redness, Bumps, and Flushing with Management in New Jersey

Roughly one in 10 American adults suffers from rosacea. New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ explains that the inflammatory skin condition is typically characterized by facial redness, pimples, flushing, visible blood vessels, nose enlargement, and eye irritation. While the exact cause of rosacea is still unknown, scientists speculate it could be caused by abnormalities in blood vessels on the face, a reaction to microscopic mites found on the face, or heightened sensitivity to environmental stressors. Both genetic and environmental factors likely play a role in the development of rosacea. Women are disproportionately likely to be impacted by the condition, with women between 30 and 50 being the most likely to develop it. When men are diagnosed with rosacea, symptoms tend to be more severe.

While there is currently no cure for rosacea, the dermatologists at Skin & Laser Center of NJ have several treatment options that can help manage the symptoms. Ideal strategies involve a combination of topical or oral medications, laser treatment, and knowledge of your condition to help avoid triggers that may cause a rosacea flare up. With experienced care and the right treatment, rosacea patients can enjoy longer periods of relief between symptoms.

Q & A

Commonly Asked Questions

What Kinds of Rosacea Does Skin & Laser Center of NJ Help Treat?

Each type of rosacea presents and is treated differently, so one of the first steps during your consultation at Skin & Laser Center of NJ will be identifying your type of rosacea:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea is characterized by facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels. It is most common in middle-aged women.
  • Acneiform or papulopustular rosacea manifests as inflamed, red, acne-like breakouts. Surrounding skin tends to appear red with visible broken blood vessels. Skin often looks oily with large pores.
  • Ocular rosacea can affect the eyes, causing a gritty feeling, stinging, burning, dryness, itching, and redness.

After your provider has assessed your skin and diagnosed you with rosacea, you will get a customized treatment plan developed to fit your unique needs. Certain treatments work best for flushing, while others are more effective for addressing bumps or pimples. Treatment may include some combination of strategies.

  • Topical products, including medicated gels and creams, are excellent choices for mild to moderate rosacea. Examples include brimonidine and oxymetazoline (among others), which constrict blood vessels to reduce flushing. With these medications, results are often visible within 12 hours.
  • Oral antibiotic medication can address more serious forms of rosacea characterized by bumps and pimples. Examples include doxycycline.
  • Other oral medications can be utilized for severe rosacea outbreaks that don’t respond to other medication.
  • Laser treatments can be utilized to reduce the appearance of enlarged blood vessels and minimize redness.

In addition to these treatment options, there are other steps you can take to minimize the severity of your rosacea. These include:

  • Understanding your triggers so you can avoid them. Common rosacea triggers include being overheated, cold wind, spicy food, stress, alcohol, exercise, humidity, caffeine, and certain medications.
  • Protecting your skin from the sun. Sensitivity to sunlight is common among patients with rosacea. Avoiding direct sunlight and using sunscreen are excellent steps to help minimize the risk of a rosacea flare up.
  • Staying hydrated.
  • Developing a skincare routine with products that don’t irritate your skin.

Our dermatologists also help patients manage symptoms of other chronic conditions—such as eczema and psoriasis—as well as diagnose and treat a range of medical dermatology issues, including acne, skin cancer, and more.
