Brown spots are a common form of hyperpigmentation that go by many names, including liver spots, age spots, and lentigo. Despite sometimes being called liver spots, brown spots don’t actually have anything to do with your liver. When it comes to brown spots, New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ explains that they can come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are most likely to appear on the face and hands, which are areas of the skin that tend to get a lot of direct sun exposure. While sun damage is a common cause of spots, it is not the only potential factor in their development. Other potential causes of spots include burns, acne, bug bites, hormonal hyperpigmentation, and thickened skin.
Skin & Laser Center of NJ offers a variety of noninvasive treatment options to lighten or even remove unwanted brown spots. While most of these pigmentation issues are benign, some skin cancer growths can resemble brown spots, so it is a good idea to have any spots—especially new ones—examined by one of our providers to ensure they are, in fact, benign. Some patients are not bothered by the appearance of their spots and require no further treatment. Others believe that spots make the skin look older (as suggested by the name “age spots”) and want them removed for aesthetic reasons. Whatever your motivation, the skincare team at Skin & Laser Center of NJ is here to help with empathetic and knowledgeable diagnosis and treatment for brown spots, as well as other conditions impacting your skin’s health.

Skin & Laser Center of NJ provides a wide range of effective treatment options to address brown spots. Some of these treatments include prescription medications that can be applied at home. These are some of the treatment options we may recommend:
The acids utilized in chemical peels help remove the layer of skin containing the brown spot. This treatment is performed in the office and requires no downtime afterward.
This is one of the most effective and popular methods for removing brown spots. Skin & Laser Center of NJ utilizes the Candela ATV or GentleMax Pro laser. Some patients are satisfied with the results after a single session, while others might require two to three sessions before the spot is fully erased. After a laser session, the treatment area may experience some discoloration and bruising, but this resolves within one to two weeks. Otherwise, there is no downtime besides sun avoidance for one to two months.
A Skin & Laser Center of NJ dermatologist can prescribe a bleaching cream like hydroquinone, retinoid like tretinoin, a mild steroid, or other topical serums to help the spot gradually fade with time.
This involves applying liquid nitrogen to the brown spot, destroying the additional pigmentation that causes the lesion. Once the treated area has healed, the skin will appear lighter.
An applicator with an abrasive surface is used to “polish” away the area of skin that holds the pigment.
In addition to providing treatment to remove existing brown spots, your provider will offer skincare advice to help avoid the development of future spots. The most essential advice is to wear sunscreen with a high SPF every day, regardless of the weather.
