Ten percent of women and more than 25 percent of men in the United States have something known as actinic keratosis. New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ explains that although the problem is fairly common, many people don’t realize they have it. Also known as solar keratosis, the precancerous lesion typically appears as a rough, scaly patch or bump on the skin. Caused by ultraviolet damage, an actinic keratosis is much more likely to appear for people who spend a lot of time in the sun or indoor tanning. It’s most likely to develop on areas of the skin frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, neck, back of the hands, and lips. When we are young, the body can repair some—but not all—of the damage caused by this UV exposure. Over time, this damage accumulates and the body is less able to repair itself.
The good news is that an actinic keratosis itself is not dangerous. With time, however, it can evolve into squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. The providers at Skin & Laser Center of NJ are here to help identify and remove these lesions before they have a chance to become cancerous. With multiple noninvasive treatment methods, including some that can be applied at home, removing an actinic keratosis is a safe, relatively fast, and effective process.

There are numerous treatment options for removing an actinic keratosis, each of which has its own strengths. Some of these treatments can be performed at Skin & Laser Center of NJ. Others can be done within the comfort of your own home. Our providers will first evaluate your skin and medical history to determine which treatment option would best suit your needs.

In addition to these treatments available at the Skin & Laser Center of NJ office, your provider may prescribe a topical medicine that you can use at home to treat lesions. These creams destroy the precancerous sun damaged cells over the course of a few weeks. The damaged areas crust up and peel off, revealing softer, healthier skin.
