Moles

Most people have moles, which are concentrated collections of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes, but many people still feel self-conscious about their appearance. Since most moles typically appear in early childhood and during the first 25 years of a person’s life, they tend to evolve with time. In some cases, they appear raised or change color or develop hairs. Note that melanoma is a cancer that develops in melanocytes, so any mole that is changing should be examined, and patients with multiple moles may be at greater risk of developing skin cancer. Cherry Angiomas

Cherry angiomas are called many things, including red moles, senile angiomas, and Campbell de Morgan spots. These bumps are more common with age, affecting 50 percent of adults over the age of 30 and three quarters of adults above the age of 75. These bumps do not hurt and are benign (meaning non-cancerous), though any that bleed or change appearance should be examined, as this may be a sign of skin cancer. Skin Tags

Benign skin growths known as skin tags develop in more than half of all adults. Sometimes called cutaneous tags, soft fibromas, acrochordons, or fibroepithelial polyps, these growths are usually colored the same as the surrounding skin, but they may also take on a darker hue. Tags often develop where the skin rubs against itself or clothing, and while they typically aren’t of any medical concern, some people choose to remove them for cosmetic or comfort reasons.

Molluscum

A viral condition, molluscum contagiosum causes the growth of wart-like clusters of bumps that are colored pink or the same as the surrounding flesh. Treatments can help the infection to not last as long, as well as minimize spread—both elsewhere on the body and to other people. This condition accounts for about 1 percent of skin-related medical diagnoses around the world.

Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition that appears similar to goosebumps that don’t go away. Dead skin cells form plugs that can develop on the thighs and upper arms in teens and adults, and may appear on the cheeks in children. The telltale bumps tend to resolve on their own, but there are also treatments to improve the skin’s texture.
