Skin Cancer Overview

One in five Americans will personally deal with a skin cancer diagnosis at some point. This disease is one of the most common forms of cancer in the world, but the good news is that it is extremely treatable—particularly for patients who are diagnosed early. The providers at Skin & Laser Center of NJ are passionate about diagnosing and treating skin cancer, as well as educating people of all ages about the importance of prevention strategies and routine skin checks. We are with you on every step of the skin cancer journey, from diagnosis to healing.

Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis, which is also known as solar keratosis, is caused by ultraviolet damage to the skin and most likely to develop in people who spend a lot of time in the sun or indoor tanning. It impacts roughly 10 percent of women and a quarter of men in the United States. These precancerous lesions look like a rough, scaly patch or bump. The good news is that the lesions themselves are benign—however, they can evolve into squamous cell carcinoma, so it’s important to remove them before this can occur.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

This is the second most common form of skin cancer, forming in the squamous cells, which are the middle and outer layers of the skin. More than 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma every year, but the good news is that it has high rates of successful treatment, especially when detected early. The providers at Skin & Laser Center of NJ work with every patient to develop a customized treatment plan to remove the cancerous cells and take the necessary steps to help prevent the development of future cancerous growths.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma forms in the outermost layers of the skin and is considered the most common cancer in the world, accounting for 80 percent of all skin cancer diagnoses among Americans. Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun or tanning salons is a primary risk factor. Not all growths present the same way, but a lesion may appear as a small, smooth, pink growth; a pink, flat scaly spot that appears irritated; a smooth bump with a central indentation; or a pimple that doesn’t heal and may bleed. Anyone who suspects they may have basal cell carcinoma should schedule an appointment with a provider at Skin & Laser Center of NJ to discuss their concerns, receive an exam, and develop a treatment plan as necessary.

Melanoma

One of the rarest skin cancers—and unfortunately, also one of the most serious—melanoma tends to form in a mole that can be new or that has existed for some time. Like all skin cancers, when detected early, melanoma is highly treatable. What makes melanoma more dangerous, however, is that it can spread to other parts of the body when left untreated. Patients who have noticed a mole or blemish that appears unusual can schedule an appointment with the team at Skin & Laser Center of NJ. Our providers can perform an examination, provide a diagnosis, and created a customized treatment plan.
