Learn More About Earlobe Repair Surgery
Prior to your earlobe repair surgery, your surgeon may ask you to stop taking certain medications, including blood thinners. You may also be asked to stop smoking for two weeks prior to the procedure as smoking can delay healing and potentially increase the chance of complications.
During your earlobe repair surgery, the surgeon will first inject a local anesthetic to numb the ear lobe. Next, the surgeon will make a small incision to remove damaged tissue.
After the damaged tissue has been removed, the surgeon will close the incision with very small sutures. The entire process typically lasts about half an hour to an hour, depending on the extent of the damage and whether they’re operating on one or two ears.
Most patients can resume their normal activities, including work or school, right after surgery, although it is important to avoid strenuous activity for four weeks after the procedure. Submerging your ear in a bathtub, pool, or hot tub should be avoided for four to six weeks after earlobe repair surgery. You’ll be asked to return to Skin & Laser Center of NJ one week later to have the sutures removed and ensure the earlobe is healing properly though the full healing process takes several weeks.
Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions will help the ear to heal as quickly as possible while minimizing the chance of infection. Expect to experience some swelling and bruising on the surgery site, but these effects should only last for a few days to one week. Keeping the earlobe clean and dry and avoiding heavy earrings or pressing your phone against your ear right after surgery are also recommended.
Once they’ve healed, your earlobes should look whole once again. Talk to our team about your jewelry options if you’d like to start wearing earrings once again.
