Vein Treatments

There are many different types of leg veins. Some are small and wispy, while others are deep and ropey and thick. Some treatments can be done for all types of veins, while others are specific to vein type. Your dermatologist will be able to guide you to both preventive measures and treatments that are appropriate.

Treatments:
Self-care: Exercising, losing weight, elevating your legs, and avoiding long periods of standing or sitting can ease pain and prevent varicose veins from getting worse.
Compression stockings: Wearing compression stockings during the day is often the first approach to try before moving on to other treatments, and can help prevent new veins from forming. They steadily squeeze your legs, helping veins and leg muscles move blood more efficiently. You can buy compression stockings at most pharmacies and medical supply stores.
Sclerotherapy: During this procedure, your doctor injects small and medium-sized veins with a solution that seals and closes those veins. In a few weeks, treated varicose veins should fade. Although the same vein may need to be injected more than once, sclerotherapy is effective if done correctly. Sclerotherapy has minimal pain. Rarely can you develop bruising or discoloration that lasts a few months.
Laser and surgical treatments: For deeper ropey veins, your dermatologist may recommend you see a vein specialist who surgically treats veins.
