Safely Remove Skin Growths and Lesions in New Jersey
Surgical excision is a precise and effective procedure used to remove a wide range of skin growths, lesions, and tumors. At Skin & Laser Center of NJ, our skilled providers perform surgical excisions with the goal of complete removal while minimizing scarring. This procedure is commonly used for moles, cysts, and skin cancers, and can be followed by a biopsy to determine whether the growth is cancerous.
Skin growths can develop for many reasons, including:
Benign growths like moles, cysts, or lipomas
Pre-cancerous lesions such as actinic keratoses
Skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma
Genetic predisposition to certain skin lesions
Chronic irritation or sun damage
Surgical excision allows for the safe removal of these growths, preventing further complications and ensuring proper diagnosis through biopsy when necessary.
Patients often consider surgical excision when they notice:
New or changing moles or growths
Lesions that bleed, itch, or become painful
Skin growths that are cosmetically concerning
A need for a definitive diagnosis through biopsy
If you notice suspicious or bothersome skin growths, surgical excision can provide both treatment and peace of mind.
Surgical excisions are performed by highly trained providers, often under local anesthesia. Treatment benefits include:
Complete removal of unwanted or suspicious growths
Minimally invasive procedure with careful attention to cosmetic outcomes
Biopsy options to confirm diagnosis and guide further care
Quick recovery with minimal downtime
Personalized surgical approach tailored to the location and type of lesion
Our team ensures that every excision is performed safely, effectively, and with precision to preserve surrounding healthy tissue.
Learn More About Surgical Excision
If your dermatologist has determined that surgical excision is the best method for removing an unwanted skin growth, the procedure will begin with the injection of a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Your surgeon will then use a scalpel to cut out the growth, along with roughly 4mm of the surrounding skin. The provider will usually then close the wound with stitches.
Depending on the size and location of the lesion, the entire process should take between 30 and 40 minutes. Patients can return home right after their surgical excision procedure.
Typically, the skin takes one to three weeks to heal if the wound was closed with stitches. Your provider will give you aftercare instructions, and following them will help your skin heal quickly and reduce the risk of infection.
You’ll want to follow instructions about how long to keep the wound bandaged, how and when to properly clean the wound, and whether to apply an ointment to the skin. Keeping the wound clean is very important during the healing process.
Your provider will also help you schedule an appointment to have your stitches removed and will provide you with information about which medications to take to manage any pain you experience after the procedure.
