Throughout recorded history, humans have been battling unwanted body hair. Ancient Greeks used mussel shells to tweeze body hair, ancient Egyptians used razors made from copper, and centuries ago Europeans used concoctions made from walnut oil and vinegar to prevent hair growth. Fortunately, hair removal techniques have evolved significantly in recent decades, both in terms of effectiveness and comfort. Laser hair removal with New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ can reduce 80 to 90 percent of unwanted facial and body hair in the targeted area for women and men.
Laser hair removal is popular due to its precision, permanence, and speed. Tweezing, waxing, and shaving might be effective, but they are temporary solutions. Skin & Laser Center of NJ utilizes the Candela GentleMax Pro®, a non-ablative laser that generates high-intensity light to damage the hair follicles, preventing them from growing new hair. The device’s patented cooling technology helps protect the upper layers of skin with a soothing burst of cold air to make the experience as safe and comfortable as possible.

A laser hair removal session at Skin & Laser Center of NJ can address unwanted facial and body hair in a variety of locations. Some of the most common treatment areas include the face, with an emphasis on the upper lip, chin, and sideburns; neck; arms; fingers and toes; back; legs; bikini line; and buttocks. Areas that are not appropriate for laser hair removal include eyelids and any sections of skin that have been tattooed. The team at Skin & Laser Center of NJ can assess your skin and help develop a treatment plan to remove unwanted hair.
Prior to your laser hair removal session, you should avoid electrolysis, tweezing, bleaching, threading, and waxing for three to six weeks. The treatment area should be shaved one to two days prior to the appointment and free of makeup, creams, or gels. Minimizing sun exposure and wearing sunscreen before your laser hair removal session can also help with a positive outcome.
The amount of time required for laser hair removal depends largely on the size of the area being treated. Targeting the upper lip may take only a few minutes, while an appointment removing hair from the legs might take closer to an hour. Before the practitioner starts using the laser, you will be given safety eyewear to protect your eyes during the process. A handheld probe will be used on the targeted area to deliver short pulses of energy followed by a cooling spray. The sensation has been compared to the snap of a rubber band, though the cooling technology minimizes this effect.
After your laser hair removal treatment, you may experience some mild redness and swelling in the targeted area—though this should resolve within a few days. After a few days, it may appear that the hair is growing. This is your body’s way of pushing the treated hair out. As before the appointment, avoiding direct sun exposure and wearing sunscreen are excellent practices after your procedure. Most patients require multiple laser hair removal sessions to reach their treatment goal. It’s not uncommon for patients to need six laser hair removal sessions spaced several weeks to months apart in order to achieve the goal of 80 percent hair removal.
Beyond targeting unwanted hair with lasers, Skin & Laser Center of NJ also offers laser acne treatment, laser scar treatment, laser tattoo removal, and more cosmetic procedures.
