Skin & Laser Center of NJ is thrilled to introduce our new Hair Loss Clinic, right here within our dermatology office—created to help you understand and treat hair thinning at its source. To become part of this hair-focused clinic, you will be scheduled for a series of appointments. During these appointments, we will obtain a detailed medical history, ask a series of questions, order personalized blood tests, take hair images, perform a scalp biopsy, and, if needed, prescribe a topical regimen, an oral regimen, and a procedural regimen.
Since hair loss can be caused by many factors—such as aging, hormonal changes, stress, or inflammation—we focus on identifying your unique cause and developing a personalized plan to support healthier, fuller hair.
Telogen effluvium is one of the most common types of temporary hair shedding, often triggered by a stress on the body rather than emotional stress alone. When the body experiences a stressor—such as surgery, illness, childbirth, medication changes, or nutritional deficiencies—hair growth cycles can synchronize. About three months later, many hairs enter the shedding phase at the same time.
Shedding may last for several months before slowing down, and re-growth typically follows. While TE can be alarming, it is usually temporary once the trigger is addressed.
Androgenetic alopecia—often referred to as male or female pattern hair loss—is a slow, gradual thinning of the hair over many years. Genetics and natural hormone changes are the main factors. Over time, hair strands become thinner (miniaturization) until they may stop growing altogether.
Patients often notice a smaller ponytail diameter, widening part lines, or more visible scalp in the mirror. While AGA is progressive, early treatment can help slow its advancement.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, causing sudden, patchy hair loss. It can occur in individuals with or without other autoimmune conditions. Treatment focuses on calming the immune response and encouraging regrowth.
