For decades, skincare providers have known that inducing tiny wounds in the skin prompts it to increase collagen production, resulting in a healthier barrier and more youthful look. Known as microneedling, this technique for treating acne scars, surgical scars, wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, large pores, and an uneven skin texture has boomed in popularity in recent years. Microneedling with PRP at New Jersey’s Skin & Laser Center of NJ capitalizes on the effectiveness of microneedling with the added benefit of accelerated healing and even better results with platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
The PRP aspect of the treatment involves an infusion of concentrated platelets from your own blood. Including PRP in your microneedling treatment accelerates your skin’s healing, stimulating tissue regeneration. Microneedling with PRP is a safe, noninvasive, and effective procedure that can be completed in less than an hour. The skincare team at Skin & Laser Center of NJ is happy to help patients in their pursuit of more youthful skin with this advanced strategy.

Prior to your microneedling with PRP appointment at Skin & Laser Center of NJ, you’ll be asked to take certain steps, including avoiding direct sun exposure and tanning, as well as temporarily avoiding certain medications, including retinoids and acid-based products. At the beginning of your appointment, your provider will examine your skin, discuss your concerns, and take your medical history. From there, they will take the blood sample that will be used to obtain the platelet-rich plasma. This process is a simple blood draw and should only take a few minutes. The blood sample is then put into a centrifuge, which separates out the platelets, which are fragments of cells that specialize in healing wounds.
Next, your provider may numb your skin to minimize any discomfort, then run the collagen-induction device over the treatment area. Afterward, the platelet-rich plasma is applied directly to the skin. Before you return home, we will provide you with aftercare instructions, including avoiding sun exposure, tanning beds, and strenuous activity. Otherwise, you’ll be able to resume your normal activities and routine the day after your microneedling with PRP treatment. Many patients experience redness, swelling, mild bruising, and tenderness in the treatment area, but this typically resolves within a few days.
Patients can expect to see positive results within a few weeks of their microneedling with PRP treatment at Skin & Laser Center of NJ. This is because it takes the skin a few weeks to start producing new collagen and achieve noticeable levels of the protein. Patients can expect to see some positive results within two to three weeks, but a significant improvement in four to six weeks. For patients utilizing microneedling with PRP to address scars, it can take months to see a significant reduction in scarring.
Depending on the goal of your microneedling with PRP sessions, you may require multiple treatments. For milder conditions, two to three appointments scheduled roughly one month apart may be recommended. For more intense conditions like scarring, three to six sessions may be necessary. During your initial consultation, your provider will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will include the recommended number of treatments to help you achieve your goals. Your plan may also include other skin rejuvenation strategies, such as chemical peels or dermaplaning.
